What we talk When we talk about Information
WHAT WE TALK WHEN WE TALK ABOUT INFORMATION
Every day, we interact with information.
But do we truly understand what information is?
What is information?
Is it the same as data?
Is information the same as knowledge?
These are simple questions, but the answers reveal something deeper. In this world, we are surrounded by information — in daily life everything. But before we can understand how we use it or design with it, we need to ask: what exactly is information?
What is Information?
Information is more than just facts or messages. It is processed data— data that has meaning, context, and value. For example, if you see the number “28” — that’s data. But if you’re told “The temperature is 28°C today” — that’s information, because now the number has context.
Information helps us understand, communicate, and make decisions. It turns raw inputs (like numbers, words, or images) into something useful. In other words:
> Data is raw.
> Information is processed.
> Knowledge is applied.
Information in Everyday Life
Think about your morning routine. You check the weather app. When you check the weather app on your phone, the app gives you information like temperature, chance of rain, and wind speed. This information helps you decide whether to take an umbrella or wear a jacket.
So, information is basically useful knowledge you get from data (like temperature numbers) that helps you make choices or understand the world better.
Knowledge is what happens when we understand, process, and connect that information. When you learn that a rainy day means you should carry an umbrella, you’ve turned information into knowledge. It’s about meaning, context, and experience.
Data is what you collect.
Information is what you understand.
Knowledge is what you apply.
Why Information Matters to Humans
Information is the lifeblood of human life. It shapes how we understand the world, make decisions, and connect with others. Without information, we would be lost and unable to learn from the past, plan for the future, or even survive day to day.
From the moment we wake up, information guides us. Information helps us solve problems, avoid dangers, and create new things.
More than that, information fuels knowledge, creativity, and progress. It allows societies to grow, cultures to thrive, and technology to evolve. Even our personal identities are shaped by the stories and facts we absorb.
In design, delivering the right information in the right way makes life easier, safer, and more meaningful.
Information matters because it empowers humans to live smarter, communicate better, and build a richer world.
